The owners were adding a storey, so the old roof came down to the last beam. We cut the frame in our workshop to the plans and brought it to site as a kit.

Then the roofers we've worked with for years laid the slates. From the first beam to the last batten took four working days.

How someone in the audience becomes an actor

The Backdrop Players have been on stage in Malton since 1998, and two or three new people join every season. Most of them have never stood on a stage before. It starts simply: you come to a rehearsal and watch.

  1. Come and watch a rehearsal. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 18:30, community hall.
  2. Try it out for a month. No commitment and no fee.
  3. Fill in the form. Membership £40 a year, students £20.

From twelve farmers to a children's club

The apiary on Hollins Hill has stood in the same place since 1958.

In 1924, twelve farmers met at the Lime Tree Inn and wrote the society's rules. Back then everyone kept hives in their own garden. All they shared was a honey extractor and a monthly meeting.

The society didn't build its own apiary on Hollins Hill until 1958. Forty years later came a club for children from three local schools, and with it a new generation of beekeepers.
